The reef or square knot is a binding knot used to join two ropes together. It can be loosened quickly by pushing the two ends towards the knot. It is not a knot to use if you have a heavy load. It is often used for tying a bundle of objects as a rope belt or to complete a lashing. It is also used by sailors for reefing and furling sails, hence the name.
